Green Room
Ravenswood Art Prize Winner’s Exhibition, Gordon, Gadigal land/Sydney
21 September - 25 October 2019
Green Room
Green Room plays on the spaces used off stage in theatre, usually a waiting or lounge room that actors use to rest in-between performances. While drawing on offstage spaces of pause and transition, the exhibition title is also intended to draw colour associations of green to reference landscape and the natural world to question the evolving relationships we have with the environments we inhabit.
Alluding to theatre, and contrasts between spaces, these works seek to dismantle traditions of European painting that ‘stage’ landscape through notions of the picturesque, deception or grandeur. Instead the works focus on the contradictions and ambiguities hidden within these traditions, representing tensions between environments and their meaning.
